In Washington today, the first Muslim elected in Congress will be sworn in using a Quran previously owned by Thomas Jefferson.
Rep.-elect Keith Ellison was born in Detroit but converted to Islam while in college. His spokesman, Rick Jauert, said this is the congressman’s special day so he wants to make it even more special by using Thomas Jefferson’s Quran.
This development resulted in arguments in other sectors who believe that only the Bible should be used in swearing-in. R-Va. Representative, Virgil Goode, maintains that this might become a precedent to future Muslim politicians.
Ellison’s camp, however, countered that using the Quran has already been tolerated by previous founders of the country.
