The U.S. State Department has defined the island of Cyprus as ‘divided’ for the first time in a document prepared for American visitors to the island.
The first sentence of the Cyprus Island Consulate Information Document reads, “There is a de facto division in Cyprus and it is a developed Mediterranean country.”
The U.S. State Department also wanted to give a message to the Greeks that there has been no change in their policy, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.
The document explained that the United States does not recognize Turkish Cyprus nor does it have diplomatic relations with Turkish Cyprus. However, those carrying a U.S. passport could enter this region. |
