Thin Doesn't Mean Healthy. Doctors Say There May Be Fat Inside.

A study that looks into the internal fat of nearly 800 men and women has found that though some people appear thin and healthy on the outside, they might be having excess fat on the inside.

According to Imperial College (London) professor Dr. Jimmy Bell, when the participants were MRI-scanned to determine "fat maps," about 45% of the women and 60% of the men with normal body mass indicies (BMIs) had high levels of internal fat.

In fact, Medical Research Council (Britain) nutritionist Dr. Toni Steer says that while BMI is a useful clinical tool, it is by no means an accurate indicator of the presence and location of fat in the body. Thin people with high visceral fat may already be bordering on obesity (even if it doesn't show).

Luckily, thin people who may have increasing levels of internal fat may be able to shed the excesses through regular exercise and a more rigid diet. Physical activity has appeared to be a more effective strategy in the fight against visceral fat accumulation, compared to simply choosing what you eat.

Being slim does not mean a person is healthy. Dr. Bell notes that diets should also be accompanied by the right amounts of exercise to be truly effective.
