Deputy Prime Minister Dr Tony Tan will join Dr Yaacob Ibrahim on a week-long visit to Egypt and Turkey from 4-10 May.

Dr Yaacob is the Environment and Water Resources Minister and Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs.

The visit forms part of a continuing initiative by MUIS (Islamic Religious Affairs Council of Singapore) to strengthen ties with Muslim communities internationally, in the context of its ongoing plan to enhance Singapore's own distinctive Muslim identity.

It also represents the latest step in the Singapore government's efforts to develop greater links with the Middle East.

While in Cairo from 4-6 May, Dr Tan and Dr Yaacob are scheduled to meet senior Egyptian officials including Prime Minister Dr Ahmed Nazif, the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Ali Gomaa, and the Grand Sheik of Al-Azhar, Mohamed Tantawi.

In Turkey from 7-10 May, the ministers will visit Istanbul and Ankara, call on senior government and religious leaders, and hold discussions with leading officials and intellectuals.

Accompanying the ministers will be MUIS president, Mohd Alami Musa, and other government officials.
