Two thousand people protested in the Black Sea city of Sinop on Tuesday morning as part of the 'Nuclear Free Life Festival' organized by the Anti-Nuclear Platform.
The festival is expected to continue for six days.

The crowd in Sinop chanted slogans such as 'Resistance to nuclear life, long live life!'

Informative exhibitions were also opened on the first day of the Nuclear Free Life Festival, which focused on the harmful consequences of nuclear power.

In the framework of the festival, various forums, discussion panels, concerts and theatre shows are due to be held.

At Tuesday morning's opening, Anti-Nuclear Platform spokesman Yalcin Oguz declared that the politicians had quickly forgotten their pre-election promises to make Sinop a city of culture and tourism.

The Black Sea province of Sinop has been chosen by the government as the location for one of its planned three nuclear power plants - after the Turkish Atomic Energy Board had carried out detailed technical studies and short listed 8 places in line with 48 criteria.

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan had claimed that the province of Sinop would be 'famous globally' when a nuclear research center was built in the province.

Turkey, whose energy needs are met from coal, oil and natural gas, is to construct three nuclear power plants by 2013.
