Some comments made in a recent interview in a French magazine by Nobel award winning Turkish author Orhan Pamuk have reignited controversy over which of Turkey's many well-known football teams enjoyed the support of Ataturk.
Pamuk was quoted in the Le Point magazine as saying "I support the same team Ataturk did, Fenerbahce." For years in Turkey, debates have raged between Besiktas, Fenerbahce, and Galatasaray fans as to which of these teams Ataturk supported.
Pamuk was also quoted in the Le Point interview as to his views on Turkish relations with the EU: "Whatever I do, I do it to bring Turkey closer to Europe." Pamuk's recently published novel "Istanbul" comes out in French on May 10. He told Le Point magazine that an important influence on this book's style had come from French film director Francoise Truffaut's "400 Blows." |
