On May 11, CEO Steve Ballmer said that the alternative business models, like Linux and open source and the advertising model of Google, present the biggest challenge in competition with Microsoft.
The statements were addressed to hundreds of listeners at an event that was hosted by Churchill Club and the Commonwealth Club. He said that the Washington-based Redmond software giant is faced with many competitors in the many areas of its business.
However, he posed two big phenomena happening. They are the new open-source and advertising business models. He explained that open source is a business model that can deliver more superior innovation.
Ballmer said that there is a competition with the new business model and the new advertising business model that is embraced by Yahoo and Google. Microsoft may not be able to embrace the open-source business model but it can embrace the new advertising business model. Ballmer mentioned that the company is aiming to be the number 1 in this area. Currently, Microsoft ranks third.
