Detect behavior through the huge Database of Phone Calls

TechnologyThe mother lode of information is the National Security Agency's phone-record database. The database is able to tell the government a significant amount about the behavior of terrorists if presented with the right questions.

Prof. Jaideep Srivastava, a data-mining scientist at the University of Minnesota said that people would be able to figure out all kinds of social networks using phone records. However, the NSA does not give out these methods. A comprehensive phone-record database will be a big help in any type of query.

Standard data mining includes three techniques.

Snowball sampling casts a wide net. A person or a phone number becomes a node which can resemble hubs of wheels. Inconsequential people show up in this method.

Combining "SigInt" with "HumInt" is the second technique wherein signals intelligence can be greatly refined by the kind of human intelligence gathered by spies. Experts will be able to point out the chatters.

NORA, non-obvious relationship analysis is a method where data miners try their best to refine it. This means that you do not have to look at all phone calls. More sophisticated tools can be used to sniff out cliques, including, possibly, terrorist cells.
