Rice supports Turkey’s EU bid

InternationalUS Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice suggested that an EU exclusion of \"Turkey as a member\" could be a “fatal mistake”. Answering a question about the new EU Constitution at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, Rice said, “It is important that Turkey is admitted as a member after it has fulfilled the necessary criteria. A conflict between Turkey and the rest of Europe could have unwanted results.”

Rice also suggested that not admitting Turkey into the union could be perceived as a “clash of civilisations” between a Muslim Turkey and a Christian Europe – a “terrifying prospect”, according to Rice.

Rice abstained from directly commenting on the new EU Constitution not to interfere with the ongoing debate but she expressed her conviction that middle and eastern European countries need to be supported democracy-wise. Rice said the EU functions as a source of “stability and hope”.
