One police officer and four demonstrators were hurt during the protests. Police took 176 people into custody after clashes erupted during a series of protests against Turkey joining the European Union in cities across the country Monday.
While there were demonstrations in Istanbul, Izmir, Adana and Hatay, the main focus of the protests, staged by the Youth Federation, were in the capital Ankara. Riot police were called in to break up the demonstration in Ankara’s Kurtulus Park on Celal Bayar Boulevard. A number of police vehicles, including buses used to take those detained away from the site, were damaged during the protests.
