 Athens, GREECE, July 28, 2003 - Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis said, “ Turkey needs to agree to the clarification of the Aegean continental shelf, and to the decisions of the United Nations' (UN) Helsinki Summit.” In a statement published by Ethnos newspaper, Simitis said that being an EU candidate has requirements for Turkey, and Ankara needs to meet them.
Simitis stated that the Helsinki Summit’s decisions were very clear. “If Turkey acts within the framework of these decisions, then Greece will bravely support Turkey’s membership in the EU. Ankara will do what all EU candidates need to do, and we will supports Turkey's efforts and join those who support Turkey's wish to be part of Europe’s progress. In this context, we will be able to lay the foundation of a new strategy that will strengthen our countries' geopolitics.”
Simitis added that the political problems on Cyprus are ‘an open wound that needs to be closed.’
